About Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide is a non-flammable, colourless gas with a slightly acidic odour at high concentration. Unlike other industrial gases, CO₂ is supplied as a liquid under its own vapour pressure — typically around 55 bar at room temperature. Food-grade CO₂ is critical for beverage carbonation, food preservation, and modified atmosphere packaging, while industrial-grade CO₂ is used in welding shielding, pH control, and fire suppression.

Main Hazards

  • Asphyxiant — CO₂ is 1.5× heavier than air and accumulates in pits, trenches, and low areas. Atmospheres above 5% impair breathing; above 10% can be fatal within minutes.
  • Toxic at elevated concentrations — not just an oxygen displacer. Causes headache, dizziness, and unconsciousness even when ambient oxygen is adequate.
  • Rapid expansion at the cylinder valve drops temperature to −78 °C — severe frostbite and cold burn risk on contact.
  • Cylinder pressure rises sharply with temperature. Store below 45 °C, away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

Description of first aid measures

Eye
Cold burns: Immediately flush with tepid water or with sterile saline solution. Hold eyelids apart and irrigate for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
Inhalation
If inhaled, remove from contaminated area. To protect rescuer, use an Air-line respirator or Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Apply artificial respiration if not breathing. Give oxygen if available.
Skin
Cold burns: Remove contaminated clothing and gently flush affected areas with warm water (30°C) for 15 minutes. Apply sterile dressing and treat as for a thermal burn. For large burns, immerse in warm water for 15 minutes. DO NOT apply any form of direct heat. Seek immediate medical attention.
Ingestion
Ingestion is not considered a potential route of exposure.

Precautions for safe handling

Use of safe work practices are recommended to avoid inhalation. Do not drag, drop, slide or roll cylinders. The uncontrolled release of a gas under pressure may cause physical harm. Use a suitable hand truck for cylinder movement.

Do not store near incompatible materials. Cylinders should be stored below 65°C in a secure area, upright and restrained to prevent cylinders from falling. Cylinders should also be stored in a dry, well ventilated area constructed of non-combustible material with firm level floor (preferably concrete), away from areas of heavy traffic and emergency exits.
